Audio keyframe (changing volume of a group of keyframe)

    Hi !

When it comes to mixing in Avid Media Composer, there is a fonction we have always used at work to change the volume of a group of keyframe : putting Mark IN and Mark OUT in timeline, and selecting the traks on which we wanna modify the volume level of the keyframes. That fonction doesn't seem to be available in Avid Media Composer 6.5, since they changed the entire keyframe system. The only way to select multiple keyframe seem to be with the lasso tool. This is really slowing the process in my work. Am I missing something ? Is the fonction I used to use still available ?

I can confirm that on 6.5 marking a region of audio keyframes is no longer functional. The marks are there in the timeline, but the region does not show as marked, and only one keyframe gets adjusted. And "show marked region" is active in timeline settings. One more to confirm please, so I can escalate.

I can also report that using the lasso method will display the marked region, but grab on to any keyframe to adjust and the region shading disappears. And only that keyframe gets adjusted, not the marked region. So it would appear that region audio keyframing is completely non-functional.

    Hi Larry,

I think the lasso method works, if you make sure to check only « Volume » in the audio data menu, and no other options like « Auto Gain » and such... But still, for my workflow, it's way much easier to Mark In/Out a region and select track than using the lasso tool or Shift+clic.

    Hi Patrick:

Correction: Lassoing does work, but only when lassoing from left to right, and keyframes lassoed do move as a region. I was lassoing from right to left. However using only mark in and mark out does not work.

Try holding the Alt key and lassoing the kfs you want to adjust. That way you can select as many (or few!) of the kf on a segment or a group of segments as you want. If you want all the kf on a segment, right-click any one and choose Select All in Segment.

    Hi Mikey:

Lassoing is now not the issue. The issue is that previously, simply placing a mark in and a mark out around audio keyframes defined that as a region, displayed shading, and allowed ajustment of all keyframes in the region globally - no need to lasso. It should still be functioning that way as well as with the lasso technique. Others who can confirm this, please report in.

    Bump.

Still looking for other 6.5 users who can confirm mark in and mark out no longer defines a region for audio keyframe global adjustment. Only lassoing will work.

Re: Audio keyframe (changing volume of a group of keyframe)

I can confirm that marking an I/O has no effect on adjusting multiple audio keyframes. Only lassoing works, and when you lasso the I/O shading disappears.

Also, is there a way to re-enable the functionality where all keyframes located on the same frame on active tracks will adjust at the same time? That was a nice shortcut when dealing with stereo fx that aren't on stereo tracks, and now you have to vertically select all the keyframes instead of MC knowing to adjust them automatically.

I've been contacted by Avid and told that lassoing multiple keyframes instead of marking the region in to out is a deliberate design change. They believe that this method is easier, faster and more intuitive. They said the beta testers agreed. So, no more marking a region - you must lasso it. And when you do, be sure to lasso from left to right, NOT from right to left, or it won't work.

    Opinions?

Re: Audio keyframe (changing volume of a group of keyframe)

    Larry Rubin:

To the best of my knowledge, no. And to be honest, I don't remember that we ever had that capability - to adjust an audio keyframe on the same position in the timeline when identical keyframes exist at that position across two or more audio tracks.

Yeah, that's how it worked up until 6.5. So like if you had music on A13 and A14 and had those tracks active, one hit of Add Keyframe would put a keyframe on both tracks, and then dragging up or down, say, the A14 keyframe would also adjust the A13 keyframe. But it only worked vertically, not horizontally

OK, I see what you're saying now. That should indeed be working, regardless of the lassoing issue. For now, you have to lasso just that keyframe, which can be problematic if you have many keyframes tightly clustered. Now, you have to expand the timeline out in that situation. Not happy about that at all.

Re: Audio keyframe (changing volume of a group of keyframe)

Yeah, and in our case since we're not cutting with Avid's stereo tracks, I actually want to always make the same volume adjustments on two adjacent tracks. So for the moment lassoing is the only way to do that.

    Thanks!

This is a BIG downer for us. We have been using that « Mark I/O and select tracks » for the past 10 years or so. We have done over a thousand documentary french dubbing using that technique. The fact that it is no longer available really slows down the process. We currently have 2 systems out of 7 running MC 6.5, but with this downer, it's not even a question that we CANNOT upgrade the other systems. This is a step back.

Where can I report that I NEED that « Mark I/O and select tracks » technique working again ?

Re: Audio keyframe (changing volume of a group of keyframe)

Yeah I've noticed that you can't In/Out anymore as well and find it extremely annoying and slows down the process when I'm forced to lasso. Really don't understand why you can't just have both.

And I have the same issue where it doesn't select all the keyframes that are vertically in the same position...you have to lasso all of them for it to work.

I don't know what beta testers you were using for this but clearly they don't use the in/out method as part of their workflow. It may be simpler to do a click drag with the mouse but it's more difficult to be precise and it takes more time.

I would very much like it if Avid were to patch this back in.
