Opening really old (circa 2000) AVID QTs / TARGA 2000 movies...

Hi Guys - long time :)

Question for the experts...(I did a forum search and did not find anything that worked) I am giving a presentation and have unearthed an old backup CD (circa 2000) that is full of AVID QTs and TARGA 2000 encoded QTs. I have the Avid 2.2.1 Codecs installed, but I cannot see the AVID files and the TARGA 2000 files won't show at all (hardware-based codec that does not exist anymore). My system is Mac 10.6.8 and I DO NOT have an AVID system installed on it (Final Cut Pro 7).

If anyone has any clues / hints / URLs / anything to offer up for me to recover / convert these files, I would be eternally grateful.

    Peace & Happy New Year!

What codec are the QuickTime files using?  Can you hear them?  White screen, black screen, can't even open them?

    Hey Todd...

AVID QTs = black screen / can hear audio. Info shows "AVID Quicktime, 720x486 / 44.1k 16 Bit Stereo"

TARGA 2000 QTs = same thing. Info shows "TARGA Video"

    Thanks

Probably an AVR codec. You're gonna need an old machine I think. I've got an old 9600 in the back I put back together every once and awhile for that purpose.

If they are TARGA2K, that sounds like the old Win-based MCXpress - a totally different beast from MC or Xpress or Xpress Pro or Symphony. You might have some luck searching for Truevision or Pinnacle Targa codecs?

Around 2000 it could also have been either ABVB AVR or Meridien resolutions. I don't think ABVB codecs ever made it past Mac OS 9, but I do recall opening up an MC7 project, with media, on an OS 9 based MC Adrenaline.

A few years ago I had to reuse some old Targa2000 AVI files (hardware encoded but the Targa is dead!).  I found a Morgan Multimedia codec that worked with a Windows partition on my Mac.  Maybe the codec would also work for QT files?  Good luck!
