Avid DNxHD codecs - which one to install?

I've seen 3 different versions of the Avid LE codecs:

    1. v2.3.4 - MC5.5

    2. v2.3.7 - MC6.0

    3. v2.3.8 - MC6.5

I'm using MC5.5/v2.3.4. Are these updates specific for that particular version of MC or they are general updates that you can install on any version?

    Thanks

    Hi,

The Avid LE codecs are for installation on systems that need the Avid codecs but don't have Media Composer or Symphony.  For example, if you want to create an animation in After Effects with an Avid codec but you don't have MC or Symphony, you can install the Avid LE codecs on the After Effects system.

If you have MC or Symphony installed, you don't need the Avid LE codecs, because the codecs for your version are installed when you install MC or Symphony.

    Hope that helps.

    ciao,

Thanks, Carl. Yep, I see what you're saying. I was wondering whether there were any fixes in the later versions that I could benefit from by overwriting the ones installed with MC?

No, codecs don't change all the time like AMA plugins.  They have to stay static, or all the other applications that use them would have to be constantly updating to keep up with changes.

The reason there are different versions of the codec package for different versions of MC is because later versions of MC have added codecs that earlier versions don't.

For example, v6.5 added the DNxHD 100 codec, so if you're on 6.5 and you work with an After Effect animator, and you want them to create animations in DNxHD 100, they'd need to have the Avid codecs v2.3.8 to use the DNxHD 100 codec.  If they had an earlier version, the DNxHD 100 codec wouldn't be available to them.

    Hope that makes sense.

Re: Avid DNxHD codecs - which one to install?

Using your example, Carl, if I wanted to use the DNxHD 100 codec with MC5.5, I presume it's ok to install v.2.3.8 of the codecs? I know the third party applications such as Squeeze will pick it up, and I presume that the DNxHD 100 codec will be available to use in MC5.5 too? I don't have MC6.5 but I might want to use some of the codecs this it has.

Re: Avid DNxHD codecs - which one to install?

Never saw an answer to his, is the above example workable?  Installing 2.3.8 do get the DNxHD 100 functionality on an earlier MC system.  I sent over some footage to an editor that was digitized at the DNxHD 100 codec and it just shows up as Unsupported (HD1080i) on his system.

No, ot doesn't work like that. The Avid Codec package is just ghe QT Avid codec, it does not let you add new resolutions to existing Media Composer systems.

Re: Avid DNxHD codecs - which one to install?

OK I understand.  Is there a way to add the new resolutions to say a 5.5 MC system?
