Avid playback lag over shared network

Hi, bit of a general question - we have lag on playback in Avid when using our SAN edit network.

Quick breakdown - we use Tiger Tech metaSan/Lan on a raid array PC, and a 1gig ethernet switch to the edit suites. All worked fine until a double disc failure a month ago.

Since rebuilding the array with 2tb discs (replacing the 750g drives that were in there) and partitioning the drive into 2tb partitions (as we had before, only more of them) we have playback lag on all suites. Varies a little depending on the power of the edit suite but even on the most high specced one it's still noticeable when scrubbing or playing back, especially at 50 or 75fps.

All different versions of MC/Symphony from older MC to MC5.5 and Symphony 6.

The only things that have changed are the drives, and the server OS (now Win 7).

Toggling quality from yellow to yellow/green to green makes no difference. I've tried different timeline settings (Page-Scroll-None etc) - tried disabling antivirus/firewall on the server PC - tried turning off windows indexing on the partitions. We've also upgraded to the latest version of metaSan, which seems to emulate an Avid unity system.

Testing drive speed to the partitions seems fine - you get between 50 - 110 mb/s depending on the suite. Copying files on and off is a bit weird though, it's quicker to copy files on to the SAN than off, about twice as fast.

Anyway, just seeing if any had a similar problem over a shared network. I'm really hoping it's not the new 2tb drives (Hitachi - 7200rpm) which were recommended and installed by an IT guy.

    Cheers

Those are major changes, many things to fine tune perhaps.

You can do drive speed tests to check the throughput which may have changed with the new setup but I'd agree I suspect the server OS is the issue.

Optimising the server for minimal latency is key.

Re: Avid playback lag over shared network

Ok, thanks guys. I have already taken off the 'free' antivirus which came with the new OS, disabled the firewall, turned off indexing on the partition I'm testing on. Don't know what else to try. I have just suggested the server latency issue to our IT guy so we'll see. Don't think there's much to be done about the drives in the RAID array (unless the RAID controller can affect things?) but are there any other things I can try on configuring the server OS?

Did you replace all the harddrives or just the failed ones.. What were the original drives, and with what did you replace them.

Re: Avid playback lag over shared network

    Hi,

We had a double disc failure on the old setup, meaning the whole RAID array failed.

So we have replaced the 12 750gb drives with 12 2tb drives, to increase capacity. It's now set up as RAID 5 with two 'hot spare' discs for extra redundancy. Previously (according to our IT guy - who was not the original installer) it was a strange RAID 3 setup.

The original discs were Seagate barracuda es.2 (enterprise) 750gb drives. When we had a single drive failure previously (not the current major failure), we used to replace drives with seagate/dell barracudas, and when we couldn't source these, we used standard WD black 1tb drives (obviously the RAID array just registered them as 750 gb). This seemed to work fine on the old setup.

The new replacements (due to the current failure) are all Toshiba 2tb 7200 rpm drives. I didn;t install them but on the packet they came in it states DT01ACA200, if that's any clue. These are not enterprise drives, as our IT guy said these would be fine and enterprise drives were not worth the extra expense. My understanding was that enterprise drives might last a little longer but wouldn't neccessarily be any 'faster'.

As far as I understand RAID 3 should be faster than RAID 5, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels#RAID_3, perhaps with a 12 disks array You should evaluate RAID 0+1 or RAID 10, whichever faster, trading room for speed, Your IT guy will certainly know better than me... don't know how breaking the RAID set in too many partitions impacts performance, it might be worth investigating the issue though.

What is the RAID controller. I'd suspect two things -SATA 3 drives sitting on an old S1or S2 controller can actually perform worse, secondly check all the settings on your ethernet card - a new OS means new drivers and some of those settings are optimised for small file transfers rathe than continuous transmission. ( i think jumbo frames might be one of them but I'm not an IT specialist.)

Can we go back to the way audio nodes used to be selected? Please? ie if you have audio nodes at the same time on selected tracks; then selecting 1 audio node selects them all at that time. Having to shift select nodes or add an in and out is time consuming and counter productive. At least make it an option.
