Workflow for 4K media into 1920X1080 project

Here is my issue.  I am shooting in 4K with a Sony FDR AX100.  My project is 1080i/59.94,  The Sony XAVC-S is 29.97 and is being converted using TMPGEnc Mastering Works 5 to 1080i.  Here is my workflow question,  I would like to import the 4K resolution into the 1080 project so that I can crop and use the higher resolution images.  Is this possible?  I realize that I would have to convert the native 4K files outside of Avid with TMPGEnc because there is no Codec for them, but can this be accomplished, or do I need to create a separate 4k project and bring my cropped files in from there?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Denny

I just did a 1080i60 project with 4K ProRes as source footage.  AMA link is your friend. Keep the 4K ftg on a fast drive and AMA link to it. Frameflex will automatically be applied to the clips to squeeze them into a 1080 frame, but you can adjust Frameflex in the bin with source settings or using Effect editor once you get the clips in a timeline.  At some point you'll want to transcode your selects with your framings into DNxHD to smooth out playback.

    Thanks Lee,

This does work, but the playback is very choppy which makes it difficult to apply filters to the timeline.  Still working on this, hopefully the experimentation will get me to a point where it is a bit more user friendly.

Hi Denny, ama linked 4k might be choppy when playing out direct but you have lots of choices with 8.3 , using an offline workflow might be what you want to do , there are also both 1/4 and 1/16 workflows so lots of possiblities, should be a document about all this posted someplace.

I only get those proxy options while working in 4K Format, not 1080. How do I go about working in 1/4 and 1/16 in a 1080 project?

Hi Lee , maybe start in 4k and 1/16 when doing the rough cuts but there are lots of possibilities so it´s a users choice I believe, also depending on system power, disc speed , what 4K codec that is linked to etc etc so the list can be pretty long.

    SamDogDigital:

Also noticed this and it will not give you the best quality imho as a transcode not renders.

Look at it as a motion adapter , you don´t want to import or transcode media with different framerates, you apply the motion adapter, do your adjustments and render settings and render the applied effect.

Same goes with Frameflex, it needs to be rendered to give you the best quality.

    Tomas,

Is that still true with v8.3?  I had to render AMA Frameflex clips with v8.2 to get ultimate quality.

With v8.3 there is the option in the Consolidate/Transcode utility to "Apply source transformations" to Frameflex. I thought that was the Avid solution for making sure the AMA Frameflex clips were at their best quality after transcode.

Re: Workflow for 4K media into 1920X1080 project

I would never trust a transcode to do a good render job myself no matter what is written in the books, maybe I have missed something but this is my take on it.

Usually I´m not very fond of Video Mixdowns but this might be the place to do it , when you are downscaling 4K to HD , no unnecessary file creations, just relink to the origin 4K and do a VM , then export QT ref or SAS .
