    Thanks Peter.

    Looks very interesting.

    But, Blackmagic?

Shame Avid cannot tell us the news in english.

    Re: New MC 8.4

It's interesting to note that as of the time of this post there is no mention of anything to do with MC on the Avid News page.

They talk about music software, storage systems and new takeovers, but not about editing software - even the new free version of MC isn't mentioned. Huh?Confused

I think for the most part it seems to be. But the addition of PCIe option, mic input and eventual addition of Avid hardware codecs suggest Avid did ask for Avid-centric changes.

as long as it works 'well' does it matter?... I want Nitris DX stability with 4k.. That fact it will work with fusion and Davinci may come in very handy?

I think even the normal one has PCIe now. I just wonder how much of a premium we are going to be charged for the Avid sticker?

The non Avid version has both PCIe and mic input. My point was the both of these features may have been added because of Avid users have it higher on the priority list.

    Re: New MC 8.4

So it's unclear to me what the benefit of this box is if hardware ingest and output aren't important - and for most of us I don't see how it is. I come in from a file, and output to a file. The only advantage I can see is if there is additional hardware acceleration for processing once you're inside MC. I have a Nitris DX now, but other than the HDSDI out and XLR audio out, I don't use the Nitris box. I edit on a 4K monitor which is fed through a Display port output on my cpmputer. Can anyone tell me what is to be gained in a digital workflow with this box? Thanks

It all depends on your needs. At the end of the day, it is just an I/O box. It is no different from Adrenaline, Mojo, Kona or Decklinks.

Depending on your workflow and delivery requirements, a computer monitor being fed by a computer GPU output may not be adequate. Color space is managed separately from my desktop color and no video tearing.

Your needs are not unique. We have a lot of clients that edit with an iMac or z200 with headphones. No client monitor or expensive speakers. For what they do and need, it works well enough.

For some of us, even if the whole workflow is file based (shooting, edit and delivery) we still depend on broadcast monitors for grading, scopes to measure the signal objectively and XLR for speakers.

    Re: New MC 8.4

Interestingly enough, Blackmagic just announced their Thunderbolt equipped Ultrastudio 4K Extreme. This model has built in H.265 and proRes recording capability as well as 12G-SDI. I notice that BMD is making a big deal out of its Avid compatibility. So, that set me to wondering what "box" is being discussed.

It is the same box. The difference I think will be the default included hardware codec. BM is will have ProRes and H.265. I know Avid is going to include DNxHR, maybe DNxHD. I am unsure if this is with or in lieu of BM's codecs.

    Re: New MC 8.4

I guess my questions is whether there is any processing power that I don't already have - I see the BMD box has hardware encoding, but I don't have any problem transcoding 4K footage to DnxHR now, or playing that or XAVC 4K back, as the proxy settings in 8.3 make playing back unrendered sequences a breeze. From what I gather the broadcast monitor is the only missing element, and for now, I'm content with a very decent calibrated LG 34" UHD monitor which, while not "broadcast" quality is certainly close enough, especially for sRGB. The box does look very cool, I'm curious how many people will be doing ingest via cables, Thunderbolt or anything else when file ingest is so easy, especially using AMA and background rendering. Avid has done a great job with 8.3, and all this 4K workflow actually works. Perhaps the money would be better spent on an even beefier computer than my Dell, although it keeps up.
