Re: Media Composer v8.4.3 | NOW AVAILABLE

    Andrew Rice:
Could some please explain to my why it takes so long?
Avid has (to my understanding) always worked with the base levels of CPU's to get there play back speed. They had to be to achieve non drop frame playback with top end computers having very SLOOOOOW processors, maxing out with 8 Megabytes of RAM and needing SCSI through put to 4 RAIDED drives for enough speed to single track SD playback. The program was written to get better speed than anyone else from the OS and hardware.   Today Avid is still highly dependent on getting their stable play back speed from the OS hardware connection.  Resolve and Premiere (Scratch I do not know)on the other hand depend on GPU's for their playback and core OS changes have less effect.

So, if some cretin a Mac changes some minor core OS function there is a likely hood that it will have an effect, and ripple, effect throughout the Avid program.  Back in the Avid on Mac only days in conjunction with Avid only IO's this did not make a significant difference, The OS's in those days had a longer shelf life and there was, if my memory is not too faulty, a much greater OS backward compatibility. That is Mac was a client responsive company.......as it had to be with their minimalistic market share.)

Mac today has become a take it or leave it company with the arrogance to believe that they know what's best for the clients so like it or lump it. This lets their programmers have the freedom to dick with anything they like. There is no standard or backward compatibility for their OS's or hardware.

As Avid still relies on the Mac OS for a lot of its advanced functionality it is more affected than the heavily GPU dependent NLE's and graphics programs.

I don't pretend to be a software engineer, but I'm not sure that this is the reason.   For what it's worth, adobe Premiere had major issues with El Capitan which were resolved (apparently) with an update released a few days a ago.

Thanks for the explanation Andrew.  It is just seems like AVID is always playing catch-up.  And coming in last...ie: other software effected by the OS upgade is usally compliant pretty quickly.

Anyway, this along with the never ending PhraseFind debacle is giving me hesitation.

But, that said, I love editing in AVID.  I have used Premiere and do use FCPX for some small jobs. And I just cant see doing a large job in anything but MC. But it does have its issues.

Re: Media Composer v8.4.3 | NOW AVAILABLE

Dodged the "CG" bullet once again! 8.4.3 works on the old 3,1 in 10.8.5 (which is not supported) with the exception of hanging when selecting quit. A "Force Quit" helps it on it's way.
In 10.10.5 it is not an issue.
The MOTU generated issue is that there is no HDX-SDI driver for 10.10! The HDX-SDI some how works in 10.10.5 but without audio. But who needs audio these days? I heard silent movies were on a come back and talkies were only temporary! Big Smile

Same here, Application manager shows me current at 8.4.2.37885. It also tells me my support plan will expire in 19 days.

    Dendawg...

8.4.4 is thre latest yesterday with 2 fixes.  I would upgrade if you can.  Is your support actually expiring or.... is AppMan just telling you that as it may in AppMan 2.4.5 ( Bug)

Re: Media Composer v8.4.3 | NOW AVAILABLE

Missed that update, though I was aware of the new bug.

Is 8.4.4 safe? Any weird stuff introduced and spotted since the release?

In other words, shall I go ahead?

    Thanks Marianna!

Don't quite see which limitation would limit me. Smile

    So I'll probably go ahead.

There are still issues with AppMan, sadly.  I would suggest downloading from the Download Center, uninstalling MC, and installing the latest version when you can.

Re: Media Composer v8.4.3 | NOW AVAILABLE

8.4.3 showed as "current" in mine until I ran the uninstaller.  Now 8.4.4 appears as a Download in AppMan.

Did you attempt to Sync AppMan to see if "current" changes?

8.4.4 is out as of yesterday and if you Upgrade and support plan was ok then you should be able to upgrade.
