    Breakout box suggestions?

My Matrox MX02 mini was rendered obsolete by El Capitan.  I'm looking at the MOTU HD Express as a replacement.  Has anyone had experience with that equipment or success with another?

    I'm on MC 8.9.1

It all depends on your work. If you're mainly doing HD, you should try to get a second hand Mojo DX or Nitris DX (noisier but more connectors), it has built in drivers and is the most stable/enjoyable with Media Composer.

I lean towards the Blackmagic boxes at the mo because I find Resolve to be an invaluable addition to the suite so the ability to have broadcast monitoring from it is a big plus.

Big downside of the BMD boxes is that they don't do proper 5.1/7.1 channel mapping over HDMI. The Avid branded version of the BMD boxes have this covered, though.

    Re: Breakout box suggestions?

i was a MOTU HDX SDI user, i sold this box as MC 7.x came out. its solid on MC 6 but newer MC versions caused dropped frames. they arent update their drivers, the actual driver is from 2012-10-30. the max resolution is 1080p30/i60, no 4K, no 50p/60p in HD. so if u ask me: NO, DONT BUY A MOTU IO for an actual Avid MC system. on a windows system i'll recommed the BM IO hardware. dont know about their mac performance.

    Re: Breakout box suggestions?

Thanks to all for your insights!  I'm sure more info on my workflow would have helped, sorry!

I edit from my home.  90% of the footage I work with is offline (HD) and I leave the finishing to others.  I just need a card to playback to my client monitor.  Although I do a fair amount of 5.1 mixing out of Media Composer, so that is a consideration, HDMI-wise.

MOTU support wrote me back to say that the HD Express does not support El Capitan, so that's that.

I'm leaning toward the Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4K, which is simple enough for my needs and appears to support embedded HDMI audio.

Again, if you're doing 5.1, that's an issue with the BMD's (although the Avid-branded versions have it right). Simply put, it center and LFE are reversed. If you go straight into an HDMI preamp, you may not be able to correct for that.

One other option to consider:  AJA

They built their rep on superior engineering and customer support.  More expensive but worth it if you value support.

    But ....

BMD has really cut their legs out from under them with Resolve free.  I worry how long AJA will be able to stay in the IO market.

If all you are doing is feeding a broadcast monitor, BMD can be ok.  And they are cheap enough that you can spend extra money to address the HDMI 5.1 issues in other inventive ways.  Just don't expect the amazing support that you get with AJA.

    Re: Breakout box suggestions?

btw, thanks, you're absolutely right about the center and Lfe channel swapping with the Blackmagic card.  Their technical support told me THEIR way was industry standard for SDI.  I (and others) have suggested their MacOS Blackmagic Desktop Video System Preference control panel should have the ability to reassign audio channels.

It's not a problem with Digital Performer (my music software) because I can reassign the channels in the app.  Avid, however, does not let me reassign so I can not edit/mix in surround.  Silly.
