partially transparent photo superimposed over video

I'd like to create a still image in photoshop where some portions of it are transparent and superimpose that still image file over the avid video such that you can clearly see the video through the parts that are transparent in the superimposed still image.

    1. what are the steps in media composer to achieve this
    2. what file format should i export out of photoshop so as to not lose the transparent portions of the still image

Create your image in photoshop with the proper transparency or partial transparencies as you see fit.

Easiest format for stills (IMHO) is .png.  Export from photoshop as a .png

Import the image into avid selecting "invert on import" under alpha channel.

Drop your imported image media onto a higher layer than your current video layer.

    Should show through.

awesome that worked perfect.  But now how can I get the photo image to last for the entire duration of the sequence?
