    Upgrading GPU

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card from NVIDIA Quadro K2000 to a Quadro P2000 or a NVIDIA Quadro P4000.  I looked up the spec sheet on the Z420 and said it can handle the Quadro 4000 and the K4000, but nothing about the P4000.  My guess is because the card didn't exist when the spec sheet was created... so that's why it's not there.  I am concerned about the power supply and if the computer can fully handle it.

Also, what are your throughts about the the P2000 vs K4000?  I take it there will be a noticible difference with Avid and the two cards; or will there be?  I generally want to upgrade the workflow working within Avid and BCC effects... don't like the waiting; just wondering if the K4000 is worth the extra money.

    Thanks,
    -A

    Re: Upgrading GPU

    i'd go for gtx 1070.

find a model with only one fan, those blows heat out of the chassis.

the world is out of gpus though, because cryptomining.

check the wattage of your PSU, if it's over 550W you're good to go.

    Re: Upgrading GPU

Z420 config guidline http://resources.avid.com/supportfiles/config_guides/AVIDHPZ420ConfigguideRevD.pdf last update Aug. '14. P series Quadro didn't exist at the time.

Quadro 4000 is ~8 years old. They run really hot. Consequently, the fan runs really loud. Distractingly so. I still have one on the shelf. Replaced it with K4200. Not silent but adequately quiet.

Quadro through k4200 are PCIe2 cards if you've an old mobo. K5000 & newer/more powerful cards are all PCIe3.

GeForce cards are significicantly less expensive than comparable Quadro cards. One is presumably better served by GeForce unless some software used (e.g. Mistika) specifies it uses a Quadro only feature.

Avid specified Quadro once upon a time but not for a while. MC does not rely heavily on GPU processing. Not sure about BCC. DaVinci Resolve yes.

BitCoin bubble has driven up GPU prices. Suggest waiting for bubble burst unless you need new GPU today.

    Hope this helps,

    Re: Upgrading GPU

The GTX 1070 is not worth it based on the current z workstation I own.  Last year I tried with a 1080 and the power consumption became a serious issue.  Plus Avid and Adobe After effects had problems seeing the CUDA cores to take advantage of the rendering capabilities... It was so much of a nightmare I just returned it.  I just want to plug a new video card and go.

You are a big fan of the P2000?  I'll jump from 2 to  5 GB of GDDR5 ram.  That should show a serious change.  I'm just still on the fence if it's worth jumping to the P4000.  At this point, I'm really not interested in spending more than the P4000.

If the heat and sound is an issue on the P4000, maybe I'll consider the P2000.  It gets a great rating for it's price and speed compared the others out there.

Heat and sound is an issue on the quadro 4000 (no letter) mentioned in the old z420 config KB article. P4000 is ~4 generations newer.

    Re: Upgrading GPU

I've decided to go with the P2000.  It's designed for the workstation and it gives me the boost I need to speed up my editing process/rendering without dropping over the $1000 pricepoint.  Thanks for everyone's feedback and help.
