Option to update dongle not appearing?

I installed 2018.7 and updated Avid Application Manager, and installed the Sentinel Driver from the Avid_Utilities folder but the option to update my dongle is not appearing Avid Application Manager.

I cleared the cache in the Avid Application Manager preferences but still no luck.

I see others have similar issues, but found no definitive solution that has been posted.

    I this a High Sierra 10.13.6 issue?

Will I need to downgrade to 10.13.5?

    Hi bdc64,

The latest Media Composer 2018.8 is qualified for Mac OS X 10.13.6.

The Sentinel.kext file needs read /write only permissions  so going to Macintosh HD/Library/Extensions, if you installed the driver it will be there.  Get info and make sure read/write is selected.

    Thanks,

    RalphC

Re: Option to update dongle not appearing?

    Hi RalphC

    Thanks for your response.

    So here's what I did:

    1) installed 2018.8

    2) updated Avid Application Manager

    3) installed the Sentinel Driver from the Avid_Utilities folder

    4) gave read&write permissions to Sentinel.kext file for everyone.

... but the option to update my dongle is still not appearing Avid Application Manager.

Anything else you can suggest I try?

Can you post a screen shot of your Licensing page? I'm not sure I understand what you are seeing.

So AppMan is NOT seeing the dongle. Is the light active on the dongle? Have you tried re-seating it?

Re: Option to update dongle not appearing?

    Marianna,

    Jan Popiden here.

I've been retired from teaching at CSUN a year and a half now and haven't even been on the forums. How wonderful to see that you're still alive and giving advice to all us Medica Composer users out there.

I want to upgrade my perpetual license (on a dongle) to Media Composer 2018.8. Honestly I haven't even touched the Avid since I retired, but it's time for me to get back to it.

Naturally, things are not going smoothly...

I'm on a Retina Macbook Pro (mid 2015) running OS 10.10.5

Downloaded the Media Composer 2018.8 Installed the application.
I manually installed the Sentinel System Driver pkg. Installation was successful. Next I plugged in the dongle and attempted to open Media Composer It crashed.
I read here to update the .kext file to allow read/write access so I did that. Media Composer still crashes.
Is there anything I can try next? I don't even see the option of getting support in the App Manager but my support contract is still current.
I saved the Problem Detail and System Config.in a word file but don't see anyway to attach it here.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

    Hi,

Yes I have tried reseating the dongle, and have tried in different USB ports.

The light on the dongle is active.

    Hi Marianna,

No, I did not select convert at any point.

I have had my beloved dongle many years, and wouldn't go near the convert option!

Re: Option to update dongle not appearing?

It seems I have found a solution to my dongle not being recognized in Avid application manager.

Four days later ... finally exhumed this Avid Knowledge Base article from Feb 2018.

Dongle not recognized in Mac OS (High Sierra)

    http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/Dongle-not-recognized-in-Mac-OS-High-Sierra

It seems the "step" I was missing was to dig into the macOS Security & Privacy settings and allow “SFNT Germany GmbH” extension. Full disclosure: I'm not sure what this is, hopefully not something that will cause another problem elsewhere!

So for anyone one else who has similar problem, I would suggest to follow the steps outlined; make sure you do everything in the order in the article.

Although not mentioned in this article, remember that the Dongle Sentinel driver installer is no longer automatically installed when you install the editing application. You need to manually install the driver from the Avid_Utilities folder (/Applications/Utilities/Avid_Utilities/Sentinel_Driver).

My beloved (seriously, I've had it since Xpress Pro days) dongle is now back in action in 2018.8 on High Sierra 10.13.6.

Thanks to everyone who posted advise.

Perhaps someone from Avid support could add to this conversation, and clarify what the “SFNT Germany GmbH” extension is and what is does in terms of Avid software and/or dongle.
