SD titles looking very bad, can you help?

I have older work on 4:3 SD in which the actual work looks quite good, but the titles are very grungy. They are3 sinple white font on black, very jagged and soft.  I have tried remaking them in Title Tool even trying to import from HD, but nothing seems to work.  Does anyone have a solution for this?

Try photoshop with a small Gaussian blur ( Try .3) or a slight glow

Thanks, Martin.  It has occurred to me to do them first in PS, but so far I have not tried it.  As soon as I get back to my edit system I will do that.
