Is this setup okay to run Media Composer ?

    Hello groups,

A friend of mine suggested the following build to run Media Composer... Now the only thing I see up front is that of instead buying 2 x 8Gb of RAM, I would opt for 2 x 16 Gb instead (32 total seems better)...

    i3-8100: http://bit.ly/2AfilUW

    MSI Z370-A PRO: http://amzn.to/2kqLaGO

    G.Skill Ripjaws V 8GB (3200Mhz): http://bit.ly/2k0Bb74

    WD BLUE 1TB: http://bit.ly/2B6pO8J

    Zotac GTX 1060 6GB: http://amzn.to/2ksP0iH

    EVGA 500W: http://bit.ly/2jogHG6

    Rosewill Nautilus: http://bit.ly/2ivSi09

What do you think ? Any changes you might suggest ?

I'm not sure that MC will run well, if at all, on the I3. There's no hyperthreading, so you've got 4 threads max. This will really hamper performance, especially for transcoding. It also looks like you're going to have a single drive. You need a separate drive for the system, and 1Tb of drive space for media gets consumed very quickly. The video card is OK, and 32Gb is definitly preferable over 16GB.

Something I was laughing at start but now I am positive about.

MC will run on a plain Geforce but I would buy again a P2000 over any Geforce.

And i3 it's a big NO for me.

i3 is not qualified I check it with hardware guys before, definitely stay away from i3. I have a set of G.Skill Ripjaws RAM before good product as far as I can tell.

Re: Is this setup okay to run Media Composer ?

    Ok... Thanks

I will check to get the i3 replaced with something compatible... I do have the option to purchase the Intel Core i7-8700 Coffee Lake 6-Core 3.2 GHz (4.6 GHz Turbo) LGA 1151 (300 Series) 65W BX80684I78700 Desktop Processor Intel UHD Graphics 630. Would this processor be more acceptable ?

As for the drives, I will be adding more drives for the media to be on a seperate drive (not the same as from where Avid is installed).

I will also look into the P2000 that George suggested.

I would choose the 9700K but it's very new.

However the i7 would be at my list for a new PC.

I run an old 2600K at @4.4G for over 8 years and still rocks.

Make sure that every disk is an SSD.

I have as by my description 1 SSD for system.

2X500 SSD (RAID 0) for backups in PC (many others by e-SATA for backup)

and I am planing of 2X1TB 500MX (RAID 0) Crucial to replace my 2x2TB RAID 0.

Re: Is this setup okay to run Media Composer ?

    ive used 2600k, 4790k, 7700k, 8700k, 7820x, 7940x for my avid builds.

I think a 8700k would be a good bang for buck cpu right now.

hyperthreading will help with transcoding, exporting, compressing, etc

i see one for $300 right now on slickdeals.

Re: Is this setup okay to run Media Composer ?

What is the benefit of spending an extra £400 on the P2000 over the geforce card?  As far as I know MC uses barely any of the GPU to accelerate anything other than a few specific effects.  CPU is far more important and a higher clock speed over more cores is also preferable I would have thought? The new 6 core i7s look pretty nice.

Genuinely interested, no one's ever been able to tell me why Quadros are any better than Geforce cards in anything other than software specifically designed to benefit from things like processing images in parallel.  If no one's got a good answer to this, then I'd stick with the Geforce and save a bunch of cash and spend it on the CPU instead.
