Avid "not responding" cycle every ten seconds

I ran into this a few months ago, running 2018.5 on Windows 7 (16GB RAM, BlackMagic Intensity Pro I/O).  After working fine for months, all of a sudden the Avid would freeze up every 5-10 seconds, and then release.  If I look at the Performance Monitor, Avid shows as Not Responding every 10 seconds (ther is no spike in CPU usage or anything like that).  Unable to solve it through resinstalls or upgrades to newer versions, I stopped using the machine.  Then one day I tried the 2018.12 release, and the problem was miraculously gone.  I used the machine for over a month with no issues- until the problem just came back again.

I'm running on an older machine so I realize I'm not operating at Avid specs here, but the machine worked great for a long time and the sudden appearance and disappearance has me thinking that this is a software conflict, that the Avid is continually looking for something (I have no AMA material in my project, by the way).  I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this issue, and what their solution was.

OK, problem seems to be solved - and it's weird.  I looked at the console and noticed it listed my DVD Drive as one of the media drives.  I had put an audio CD into the drive yesterday and not thought anything of it.  I removed the CD from the drive, and the Avid returned to normal.  I must have had a CD in the drive the first time this happened as well.

The Avid must have been trying to access that CD repeatedly and maybe write to it?   I've never had this happen before - anyone else ever have this happen?

Is there a way to mark this issue as a bug so that what caused it gets looked into?

as an experiment, try disabling AMA volume automount. Not that it's a practical solution, but i'd be curious to see what happens.

It was already disabled (I think I tried it some time ago as part of my attemt to troubleshoot this issue).

Just to be clear (for my benefit), did you only see the problem when the CD was inserted into the DVD drive? In other words, problem fixed when CD was removed from the DVD drive?

Yes.  Once I pop out the CD, all returns to normal.

Maybe Avid should add a more general drive filtering configuration (the same way you can filter out your boot drive in the media settings) although this particular use case could be handled with a design change that would poll the drive in a background thread rather than blocking the main UI.

What I don't get is, I've edited on systems with a CD sitting in the drive a zillion times over the years with no problems.  Is this a bug in the newer versions of Avid?  And if so why does it not seem to be happening to anyone else?

I'm curious, what else is attached to your system in terms of storage?

    Are you just working locally?

I have one external media drive, Mac formatted, running with Mac Drive (although the problem occurs even if the drive is off).  Other than that I just have local internal NTFS drives, but I am not using them for media.  Nothing networked.

Got it! I was curious if there was anything unusual about the system, but it sounds fairly run of the mill...

Yep.  I tried deleting the  Blackmagic driver, the firewall, the antivirus, anything I could think of that might be blocking the Avid from accesing something or cause it to be looking for something.  Did a system restore, uninstalled and reinstalled Avid, upgraded and downgraded it.  Nothing worked until I popped out that disc.  It was both euphoric to fix it and aggravating that after all that work it was that simple.

Avid has had the ability to automatically mount memory sticks/removable drives (when you attach them to your machine) for quite a while. It then scans the drive for linkable media.

I wonder if it's doing the same to your CD/DVD disc?

Can you see it as a drive in Avid, and can you unmount it from the 'File' menu?

You could also try turning off the relevent settings in  'AMA Settings - Volume Mounting'
