Avid News - Why the SUPER Emphasis on NAB Attendees?

So, I can't figure this out.  What is the economic business advantage to ignoring all of us not at NAB?  This has never made sense to me, but Avid keeps doing the same non-messaging year after year after year. Like a bird flying into a window. Over and over.  Avid seems to primarily distribute info to booth attendees, and then those people will hopefully tell others over the course of the next few months by word of mouth. Or unicorn magic.

Even in the tiny, tiny bits that have been released, note that the underlying message is always basically, "learn more at our booth!".   Well, no.  If you have something to say, tell us.  We're not going to visit your last-century booth.

I’m a perpetual subscriber in my 9th month of an affordable plan I renewed since the subscription model began.. I’m already getting whatever the next version provides, which was decided a long while before this week. I feel that the Avid team deserves to have a Vegas roadtrip, untethered to the social media PR bandwagon, if that’s what they want. I’m content to let the new version speak for itself.  I am happy if the new UI includes more options for increased customization, and legibility through higher bin background-to-text contrast... a request I’m hoping was acted on. I’ve gotten to the place where I just appreciate MC familiarity and reliability.

Telegram! the point is about communication. Look at how BM is spreading news. For all of us who cannot obviously be at NAB the lack of Avid leaks is disappointing, just a video with tacky transitions and a couple of (re)imagined press releases do not fill in the gap.

I couldn't agree more with the previous posters.

Many, many, MC NAB releases ago the Avid Web site and this Forum were full of information regarding the latest release version. At the moment there is zero information regarding the differences or options available for the new MC versions.

The videos posted on YouTube are, to say the least, an embarrasment. In this one the camera was recording in NTSC while the Brit was speaking in PAL. In this one the only things missing are a Camera person and Audio assistant.

Other companies are showing how much that they care for their products and customers while Avid gives the impression of "Who cares? We're Avid and that's it."

Sorry state of affairs to see a company treat their loyal customer base, and their products, in such a way.

I wasn't going to chime-in on this until I took a look at Avid's YouTube channel (based on gswilson's post). All I can say is that compared to BMD, Avid has a long way to go to produce meaningful content for its user community (in terms of new product offerings). How about a presentation of Media Composer 2019 that is more than a series of jump-cuts and out-of-sync audio - unwatchable!

Plus - I really didn't get much of an impression of what Media Composer 2019 is supposed to deliver...

Avid's YouTube video introducing the new MC starts with a voice-over proclaiming  "For aspiring storyteller's who want to be heard..."

Aspiring?  MC has the most mature and experienced user base of any editing platform in the world.  Clearly, this video was intended for the non-MC user.   So while Avid is focusing its person-to-person marketing to professionals at events like NAB, the producers of this video seem to think we're a bunch of 20-something wannabees.

Re: Avid News - Why the SUPER Emphasis on NAB Attendees?

Well those of us that have worked for ad agencies know they rarely have a grasp on the product they're trying to sell. I'm sure some copywrighter came up with "aspiring" and somebody in management quickly read the copy and didn't hang on every word like us users would. But maybe newbes/wannabees is where Avid sees their growth and concously are going after the new user market. Obviously they need new blood to back fill us old war horses. And the problem with any promo piece is how to talk to the diverse audiences with a wide range of product experience and applications. I do industrials so I could care less about features. But features are far more intersting and cooler to show than my latest medical education series. For my market a good title tool is key, I could care less if I can output to Netflix. So it's tough for any marketing department to address a wide user base such as ours all in one promo piece. I've also been amazed how bad a lot of promos are for companies in our industry, which I find really ironic. It's like content is driven and created by the programming/geek side of the company and not by the artist who use the product.

Just a thought...  If I were in charge of Avid's marketing, I would have a contest for the best Avid promo video created by end users who work with the product every day and probably know it better than anyone else.  Offer a prize--maybe a couple year's free subscription--to the winner.   With MC's incredible user base, I predict you'd get a lot of editors coming up with some pretty cool (and well edited) videos, not just to win the prize but because they care about the future of MC and want to show it off in it's best light.

Avid is bad at provding info lol. What is really sad is that some people still think you have to import footage in MC. Not sure if that is avid fault or the people making those comments but I would love to Avid be a lot more vocal and putting out info concerning MC new version, look, as well as some training on Title tool +

Re: Avid News - Why the SUPER Emphasis on NAB Attendees?

Ironically a company dealing with communication professionals is unable to make good communication. We, the customers, can tell good communication from bad. The marketing department has always been the Avid weakness, with regards to communication, and a vision of the future and the way development has to take. The fact is that stakeholders and investors have priority, not the users; their interests are not in conflict, the better the product the happier them both, but You can make a little money fast, or plenty in the long run, and it seems like the stakeholders like better the former, they're after quick cash, and don't care about the product: once it'll be impossible to further milk the cows they'll abandon the farm in favour of another one, more profitable, and quick, while making money betting on quality takes time.

As for the new interface, I'd rather have overall technical improvements, changing the windows management alone won't be enough to attract new custors, along with cheesy AMA performance, poor audio editing, outdated effects, to name just a few things at fault.

To the colleague who says that there's no need to import anymore I say that's true, You need to link and transcode instead, as working with some file formats and resolutions just linking files is painful as of now. Wouldn't it be better having a new playback engine, instead of a new interface?

+1 With 1 remark. Improving the UI is so long overdue that it would have become a priority sooner or later. What is disturbing my 'perfect order ocd' world is that each and every product in the Avid portofolio shows it is historically Frankensteined together and that nobody ever cared to bring some consistency throughout.
