Any old timers still around? MCXpress question

We have mca at work and have to ship it out.  In its place comes the old nt based mcxpress.

When I digitize, the audio comes in but cant be monitored from the clip.  The clip has to be slapped into the timeline, double clicked to open the audio track and then the track must be centered manually-in other words, just placing the clip on the timeline produces no levels until the track is opened and manually centered in the pan.

The help files are no help.

    TIA.
