    Quick Question,

Can Symphony Nitris V 3.0.5 with the Classic I/O run with Vista Business?

    Thanks

Yes, as long as you have Vista Business 64-bit SP1. You can go 3.1.1 or 3.1.2 for free, by the way. That's what I did. Classic Nitris Symphony on XW8400 VistaBiz 64bit.

Check the sys requirement in the ReadMe, and turn off all the nonsense in Vista that you can (docks, aqua looks, etc). Also, get the right drivers for your SCSI and/or Fibre and/or eSATA cards.

The benefit is that you have much more RAM available than when using XP 32-bit. I've put 8GB in mine, and there is now 4GB fully available for Symphony, which was around 2.5GB on XP32. For longform and/or complex scenes, having 4GB available is almost mandatory.

Thanks for the Info.  I'm running Vista Biz 64bit on my home system (with MC/analog Mojo) and I love it!

So I'm just getting my info together to get them to switch me to vista at work.

I did find one gotcha on My classic Nitris, I have to use the current Nvidia version of driver, not the one Avid recommends.

What caused you to switch drivers?

Weird, I use the Avid recommended one on my FX3500.

What was helpful for me was this posting on the Avid-L2 by Chris Magid.

I did not follow it to the letter, but got some good ideas from it.

Also, if you will be using Vista-based Avid systems on 4.2.x Unity products, you will need 4.2.4 on the Media Network side and 5.1.x on the Unity Client side.

One more thing I did: I put in a new SATA drive to install Vista to, and kept the original C-drive so that I could roll back to my previous XP32 install if things didn't work out. Things worked out just fine, though.

My reason to switch was the poor amount of RAM that is actually available to the application on a 32-bit platform. Memory performance has MUCH increased since I switched to Vista 64bit. I heartily recommend the switch.

Re: Symphony Nitris Classic with Vista?

So we set up Vista business on our xw8200 system Symphony, using 169.47 driver and quicktime 7.4.5

I know the 8200's aren't officially supported with Vista.  It worked for a few days. Then out of the blue

We had some issues.  It would do 1 of 2 things.

1 - It would freeze when starting the Avid (during initializing open gl)

Sometimes it would start all the way but when you would play a sequence or any media

The audio would play but video would stay on the starting frame and the whole system would freeze.

We would have to ctl alt del out of Symphony.

    Has anyone experienced anything similar?

    Thanks

Re: Symphony Nitris Classic with Vista?

Has anyone attempted to run SN classic w/ Vista Biz 64bit on an xw8600? The fool I am, I ordered one to upgrade from our sloooow xw8200 on XP 32bit SP2, encouraged by Job's tale of running SN classic in VB 64bit -- but neglected to unearth until just a little while ago that, per Avid KB, there are not sufficient PCI-X slots on the xw8600 to run SN classic.

If you confirm that the xw8600 is a no-go w/ SN classic, what's the fastest proc setup on a xw8400 that someone is already running SN classic w/? Still running 1.8.3 on the xw8200 w/ dual 3.4Ghz Xeons, but it gets memory-cranky way too quickly. Thanks.

I'm running a dual 3.0 Ghz 8400. It isn't supported but it works.

Re: Symphony Nitris Classic with Vista?

Thanks, Tim -- found the specs, and apparently up to a dual quad 3.0GHz is supported on the xw8400. Just found a screamin' deal on a new dual quad-core 2.66 xw8400 w/ the FX3500, and will report back at some time as to speed improvements once all is up and flying.

Just make sure you follow through on Job's link above and turn off all that crap in Vista.

Can I use Vista Business 64bit SP1 on a XW9300 connected to Nitris Classic?

This xw9300 is running on AMD Opteron Dual Core 2Ghz Processors (code name from AMD is 270) with 4GB of RAM.

    And I'm using Symphony 3.1.x

One document on the Knowledge base site from Avid said that this isn't supported, but my question is if someone can tell if it will work in their opinion. What is for example the reason why it will not work?

This is the document: A compatiblity chart for DS 10.x and Symphony Nitris 3.x

I have heard of the 9300 burning up ATTO cards. Maybe Randy Rike can chime in here.

I like to hear more of this issue. Does anyone know something more about the combination between the xw9300 and ATTO cards? What do you mean by burning up?

    thanks.
