Open it with MPEG Streamclip and save it as a QuickTime file using an Avid Codec.

I've just tried that, I uninstalled quicktime, reinstall quicktime alternative 1.81, disabled directdraw acceleration, and tried to import the .m2v file, but it just crashes mpeg streamclip

It must be using a MPEG codec that it doesn't have. MPEG codecs often aren't free and need to be licensed to be distributed. Apple sells a QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component.

See if VLC can play the file. If so Super should be able to convert it, they both use FFMpeg.

The Combined Community Codec Pack might help.
