    Flourescent Flicker

    Hey everyone!

I'm sure I'm not the first to have this problem, but I can't find anything on it in the forum.  I have an interview in my project that was shot under a flourescent light.  All through each clip you can clearly see the flicker that's coused by the light.  My question is... is there a way to remove, hide, reduce, minimize this flicker so that it's alteast less distracting?  I know there's probably not much that can be done, but if there's any tricks that can help I would appreciate someone's expert advice.

    Thanks in advance,

If you have the Sapphire plug-ins package, there is a flicker removal effect. I'm not at my Avid to check right now, but I don't think the BCC Continuum package has it. I could be mistaken, however.

    Re: Flourescent Flicker

    Thanks to both of you,

Sadly I do not have the Saphire plugin set and right now I'm on a shoe string budget so I can't spring for the 3 prong effect either.  I looked through the Boris FX lists and couldn't find anything that really sounded like it would do this job.  I think I may have to just suck it up on this project.

I did have to adjust the contrast, mostly bring up the darks, because these shots were also underexposed.  In adjusting the contrast I found that the flicker has reduced itself somewhat, but is still quite noticeable.  Is this essentially similar to what the plugin effects would do?

    Thanks,

    Jonny

    Jonny:

I don't know if this will give you an acceptable result, but you might want to play around with the BCC Deinterlace filter (assuming you have the 3rd party plug-ins bundle with your MC).

    Re: Flourescent Flicker

Thanks to both of you for your responses and advice.

Unfortunately I do not have the Saphire plugin and on my current shoe-string budget I can't spring for the 3 Prong plugin either.  I was also unable to find anything in the BCC effects that seemed like it would do the trick.  I think on this project I'll just have to suck it up.

I did have to adjust the contrast on the clips because they were underexposed and in doing that I have noticed a small reduction in the amount of flicker.

I wonder if this is how the plugin effects would work?

    Thanks,

    Jonny

Search for the MSU deflicker plugin for Virtualdub.

Both are free so it might worth a try.

    Re: Flourescent Flicker

    Hey thanks again everyone!

I tried just a few minutes playing with the BCC Deinterlace effect yesterday, I'll admit I didn't really know what I was doing, but I did not really see any difference in the video.

I just now finished downlaoding the Virtual Dub program and the Flicker filter, installed them (V-dub seems to run as an executable file so actually you just run it.)  and after about 5-10 minutes clicking around figuring out how the program operates I had the filter in place on a short test clip from Avid.  Then I re-imported to Avid and edited it into the time line.  The new clip needs a little color correction to compensate for the contrast but looks good otherwise.  I then actually trimmed some of the original clip back next to the replacement clip jusst to see what the difference was.  It's amazing to see that one minute there's no flicker and then suddenly it's like a strobe light's been turned on.

I'm working on getting that short segment of the video uploaded so any doubters can see my results.

Thanks once again, you all rock!

the clip is attached above,  watch the interview section, it starts with the Virtual Dub clip and then switches to the original.  Also note that the graphics are all on other tracks so they have not been through Virtual Dub.

So the plugin works fine then. It's a great difference that I see.

    Well done.

P.S. Not to scare you but there is an interlaced "problem" when the lower third is coming.

I see what you're talking about with the interlacing, but I don't see that in Avid.  Could it be a setting when exporting the Quicktime file?

It will probably be only at the laptop screen. I will burn a DVD from your file just to see.

But anyway it's too fast to get noticed from the casual viewer.

Directly from the TV. You are good to go.

And that filter does a terrific job.
