Re: Avid v7 is crashing when transcoding XDCAM AMA clips

That's fair. Just seems every thread ends with people saying:

    1) "I'm going back to 6.5."

    2) "I don't know... I give up."

This is definitely "a", not "the", solution. Users shouldn't have to plan around crashing just because of spanned clips.

Instead of crashing on transcode, if Avid could:

    1) detect for spanned clips.

    2) transcode what it can.

    3) display what it can't.

    4) Then allow the user to decide.

I'd be OK with that for now. Certainly better than catastrophic failure. I've trashed prefs multiple times so MC would reopen because of this.

I have the same error from Canon300, spanned MTS files. Even downloaded Canon plugin posted 2 days ago on Canon website and still it did not correct. My workaround was to AMA link directly to the 3 spanned MTS files, transcode and stitch back together. Works for now until Canon releases a working plugin.

Re: Avid v7 is crashing when transcoding XDCAM AMA clips

    Hi all,

Greetings from the Great Land Down Under.

OK, seeing as the door has been opened...

I too have had these same issues consolidating long XDCAM clips from a Sony PMW-EX1. Any spanned clip I try to consolidate gives me the same problem.  I even tried a different camera and got the same thing.  My workaround is to use the Sony application to turn these into MXF files and then bring those files into MC but this is double-handling, time-consuming and clearly not a long-term solution.

The biggest problem for me is that 99.9% of my incoming media is from these XDCAM cameras.  Now don't get me worng, I love MC7 but a jump back to v6.5 is definitely a viable option for me right now until this gets fixed.

    Cheers,

    Daev Forsyth

    Hey Dave,

Is this less elegant than your current workaround? Or is it the same except you're using Sony's app to merge the MTS's?

    (XDCAM generates MTS files, right?)

Re: Avid v7 is crashing when transcoding XDCAM AMA clips

    Hi Isaac,

Good question.  Firstly, XDCAM (at least the XDCAM I get from our Sony PMW-EX1 cameras) does not generate MTS files but rather MP4 files.  If you are dealing with MTS files, then although you may be using a Sony camera, you are not working with the XDCAM format so my workaround may very well not help you.  However, my workaround is as follows...

    1. Download the "Content Browser" application from the Sony website. There are two verisons.  V2 is a paid version but you can still get the free v1 which for my purposes is absolutely fine.  You can download it at http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/contentbrowser1
    2. Use the Content Browser to open the target folder one level up from the BPAV folder (just like with AMA)
    3. Select the file/s to be exported in the Explorer window in the Content Browser application and choose File>Export>MXF for NLEs...
    4. Choose a destination for the MXF file and export it

You can then import the file/s into Media Composer and because the media is already MXF, the import is very fast.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Dave Forsyth

    Hi Dave,

after my original gripe about plugins, I was a happy camper after Sony finally released their plugin.

I now notice you guys are having workflow issues with Sonys PMW-EX1, I use a PMW-EX3 and my workflow works very well, since purchasing the camera, I have always used the Sony Clip Browser (v2.6) the clip browser allows me to preview and select the exact length of video to import plus it gives me a good workflow that works well, it's slightly slower, however, it is very stable.

I trust this workflow might work for you and others having issues with EDCAM EX Cameras.

    cheers, G

Like Abraxas, for years I used the Sony Browser to export the clips from the SxS card as MXF files and then import these into MC.   I recently switched to a workflow where I link with AMA and then transcode to DNxHD before editing.   However, when I'm in the field shooting a documentary and cannot get back to my edit system at the end of each day, I still use the Browser (installed on a laptop) to export MXF files ("export for NLE") from the camera to a harddrive.   I don't want to risk copying the SxS card's file structure, deleting the card, and then having problems later when I try to link with AMA.   The MXF exports from the Sony Browser have never failed.

So is this fixed yet or are we stil looking at work arounds? ( Yes they work, but I am at a school, work arounds add complexity--another step to learn always throws people off. Especially when everything worked last year on 6.x

Re: Avid v7 is crashing when transcoding XDCAM AMA clips

7.0.2's a bugfix. Check the README, do a Find for "XDCAM", see if yours was addressed.

I recommended it because (at least on paper) mine was. From the README:

Bug Number: UDevC00181105. In some instances, m2ts files did not AMA link.
