MC 8 compatibility with iMac - do I need to buy a new computer?

I have installed the 30 day trial of MC 8 and I have not been able to get mpeg4 or .mov files imported into it (or any other kind of file for that matter).

    The error messages have been:

One or more settings were unable to load. Please check console for details.

Exception! A serious error occurred! It is recommended that you immediately save your work and restart the computer.

Creating video from QT for (document name) - I haven't gotten further than this point, where I get stuck on the pinwheel and have to force close.

I'm wondering if the problem is almost definitely compatibility: I have an imac 20 inch, mid-2007, OS X Mavericks, intel core 2 duo, graphics card ATI radeon, and 4GB RAM.

If this program definitely won't work with my current system, is there a way to download a trial of MC 5 or at least earlier versions of MC so I can use this program without having to buy a new computer?  My use of MC would be very basic, I don't need the fancy stuff.

    Thank you for your help!!
