    Hi Scott,

I am sorry to jump on this old thread, but I wondered if I could ask if you might offer some advice on relinking in Avid for an online edit? I have been reading all the things I can find that you have written in recent times, with particular interest in the adding of custom metadata columns to assist with file relinking.

I am having several issues with zero starting timecodes (00:00:00:00) and repeat source file names, and wondered if there was a good way of dealing with situations like this.

The clips in the sequence have been transcoded from AMA sources (AVCHD, DSLR, XDCAM) and in some cases converted from 50p to 25p in the transcode.

I have been testing out adding AUX timecodes to the troublesome clips (in reference clips for the sequence and the reconnected AMA files), in the hope that I could make a unique link in combination with 'Source Path' as a metadata link. This seems to have been inconsistent in its results.

In your experience, have you found reliable ways of doing things like this?

Thanks for your help, and sorry to resurrect this thread.

    Kind regards,

    - Ian

As of Media Composer version 6.5, a sequence can relink to master clips that have custom column metadata.

My special favorite path to relink is using "Aux TC2" column and the custom "LINK" column with populated metadata for master clips has been a solid online sequence relinking workflow to versions of master clips. In the Bin column titled "FPS" there needs to be an exact metadata match for a relink in the Avid usning the Avid Relink Command.

as far as 00:00:00:00 start timecode metadata for master clips in an Avid Bin:

AMA-Direct-Linking using non-timecode sources in a source file, can create 00:00:00:00 start timecode. For that same file if the Avid user used the file>import command  the Avid Media Composer assigns start timecode of 01:00:00:00.

I hope this is helpful!!! [view my complete system specs]
