Still no XAVC-S? Why is Avid risking to lose customers?

How come other companies get the latest codecs and Avid doesnt? Is this a communication problem? What is so hard about calling Sony? It doesnt matter if it is a "consumer codec", we want it, our clients want it.

Both companies could profit from integrating the codec, it would be win-win.

Now it is lose-lose. Why is Avid risking to lose customers?

The longer Avid waits, the more customers will look for other solutions. Stupid.

    I want Avid to win.

If the responsible person is to shy or weak to pick up the phone and call Sony, give me the number, I'll do it.

     Does it not??

It appears that complex issues were designed into the "New Codec" long before the first camera was shipped. To my knowledge no one has defined why it why it was designed this way and subsequently designated a consumer format by Sony.  Is it that the audio and video cannot remain sync locked if you separate them? Is it that it has no standard for TC in Metadata? What short cuts did Sony deem acceptable for a "consumer format"? Was it required to be able to compress more media onto slower cards? Is there no reliable clip spanning?  Any one of those could seriously effect any (AMA) Linking and possibly make it a very time intensive (expensive) process to write a professional AMA plugin.

Without even finding out how "in touch" the two companies have been on this matter for the last 18 months? Or what the "real" issues are?

I wonder what happened to the $99 plugin idea from that company that makes the AMA support suite for a great many formats? Can never remember it's name.

The plug in is from Drastic Technologies, and can be found at the Avid AMA site at

    Hope this helps.

My own personal experience with this is that it has been sporatic in it's effectiveness.  There is, I believe a 30 day trial so that you can check it out.

There was halfhearted support for HDV in the past, many said "its a consumer format". Its been broken now for two releases.

Right. I have a mental block with the name of that company. Did they ever come out with a $99 XAVC-S Only version of that plugin?

Re: Still no XAVC-S? Why is Avid risking to lose customers?

I followed the link. Probably one of the worst websites I've ever seen (poorly designed). I see no evidence that they have a new $99 offering. It's like they aren't a real company. I've emailed them a few times but they don't appear to be interested in replying to my queries (they did reply once and that was it).

There are several users having capture issues and some talk of Via chipsets, etc. I haven't tried to capture from my FX1 for ages. I should to see if it still works :-)

Via have never worked , not even in the old Liquid days but I cannot for my life see what this has to do with this thread

I've had Via chipsets work (the Asus P6T mobo uses Via, apparently) but they have always been known as problematic. I think the reason HDV was raised here is to demonstrate another example of Avid not supporting a 'consumer' format (although I shouldn't speak for TVJohn).

In fact, Avid does support HDV quite well.  I'm not sure if the current issues some folk are having with HDV capture is even on Avid's radar - I haven't been tracking this issue.

I'm not sure why this question of XAVC-S support keeps coming up. Maybe we need an FAQ pinned here. Avid will likely never support this format and Sony has stated that they will never write an AMA plugin for it. Seems like an impass but other forum members have offered their solutions including using ClipToolz to rewrap the XAVC-S material into a MOV container or to try the Drastic plugin.

Where did you hear this? As I posted earlier, it has to be supported in MC First, otherwise MC First will be dead on arrival. And if it has to be supported by MC First, then it's not much of a jump to have it supported in MC.

Which of course begs the question of where is MC First? But that's another post in a different forum.

OK, yes I'm speculating a bit about all of this; mea culpa. But one doesn't have to do a great deal of market research to figure this one out.
