    USB2 HD issue

I have a backup problem, more precisely a hard drive problem !

I usualy backup the media files on USB 2 hard drives, we have plenty of them from various manufacturers (Maxtor Freecom, Teac....) Never had any issue.

Today wa got a new 320 Gb Teac HD. I plug it to a front USB2 connector, it is recognized, BUT I lose the MCA dongle. As soon as I disconnect this HD, the dongle is recognised again. It is like the HD would take the dongle's "place". I swapped to the second USB connctor, but same issue ! What should be my solution ?

    Any suggestion ?

    Thanks in advance !

Does the drive have it's own power?  Sounds like it is using all the power on the USB ports.

You might try running either the drive or the dongle off of a hub.

Dongle is connected directly on rear side of the computer, USB HD is on the front side, no hub in use !

Strange it is only with one drive. Try changing the port the dongle is plugged into after you have connected the problem drive. Try assigning a drive letter to the drive if you allready done so.  I like USB hubs.

    Already done it

Doen(t matter, the dongle goes out as soon as I connect the HD, I can hear the Windows audio disconnection signal following the HD connection audio signal.

I can change the drive letter in storage management, but the dongle is already unrecognized, weird, never saw this. My further investigation will be to connect this HD to the Xpress /Mojo station !

Are any of your other USB drives as big as this one? Maybe formatting it into 2 partitions?

    Re: USB2 HD issue

    Just tried on Xpres/Mojo computer.

First connected the 320Gb USB2 HD to a front connector of the computer, I've got a message which says something like "the USB device is connected but not recognized by Windows". Tried on a rear connector and it just works fine. Do the different connectors not have the same behavior ?

    Re: USB2 HD issue

It also works fine on the rear USB connectors on the MCA HP XW8000

That is to say that all conectors don't have the same performances !!!

bump - Is there a logic to the ports?

I'm looking for an answer to why after reconnecting all the USB peripherals that I'm having odd intermittent failures - sometimes 500gb drive shows up as empty volume, sometimes it shows all the folders I know are there. USB DVD burner sometimes won't burn, USB printer gets halfway through a job then gets stuck...
