Create square videos 1080x1080 for social media

    Hi!

As stated on the subject, I need to create square videos for social media. As the source, I have images in the moment. I want to add transitions, fading and titles for now. Video content will for sure also be added to the mix soon. It's a first try now.

In Media Compose First on my Mac I only could set the resolution to 1920x1080. Is this a limitation of the free version?

I found a tip somewhere to use images in 1920x1080 and mask the video with a square mask to see what it looks like. Then change the resolution on export. But also there I could only export in 1920x1080.

Is there a way to accomplish this? Would be sad not to be able to use Media Compose First because of that... :/

    Thanks for your help!

Yes. You don't get custom sizes in First, only in the full version of Media Composer.

I'm not sure about this, as I don't have a First system to test with. Hopefully a First user will chime in soon.

Camoscato, thanks for your fast answer!

After applying some google-fu I found an interesting solution. For those who are not scared away by using the command line, ffmpeg can be used to crop the final video.

This StackOverflow question has a useable answer: https://video.stackexchange.com/questions/4563/how-can-i-crop-a-video-with-ffmpeg

I will give it a try...

Cool. I'm interested to hear if that works.

    Works like a charm! :)

It needs the latest version of ffmpeg. 3.4 was the most advanced in Mac Ports and was sufficient.

    This one-liner did the trick:

    ffmpeg -i inputfile-1920x1080.mov -filter:v "crop=w=1080:h=1080:x=420:y=0" -c:a copy outputfile-1080x1080.mp4

For the input, I scaled my images to 1080x1080 and increased the canvas to 1920x1080 and filled the extended area with grey to see what is the fill.

If only the title tool would support opacity. But this can be done in Photoshop and be imported...
