Can't import EDLs, consistently get "the file is not valid and can't be opened"

I'm finding that simple CMX3600 EDLs I've exported from my VFX database can't be imported. Attempts to import these EDLs results in a "the file is not valid and can't be opened" error.

I decided maybe my EDLs were not up to snuff. So I created a simple sequence of two clips in Media Composer and exported CMX3600, File_32, and File_129 EDLs of that sequence using List Tool. Then I tried "import EDL" on these EDLS that were created from within Media Composer. The result, instant  "the file is not valid and can't be opened" errors.

I've attached a simple two-clip CMX3600 EDL. Had to rename the file to end in .txt so that this forum would allow it to be attached (feature request 1: might be worth looking into changing that setting in the forum software to allow the attachment of more file types).

Anyone know the secret to creating EDLs that Media Composer can import? Or am I running into a bug with this particular version of the software?

Thanks for any help or information.

(feature request 2: can the text in the splash screen not auto-scroll away? It's currently a mild barrier to grabbing the version number, as it ends up scrolling out of view after a pretty short time delay. I'd suggest hiding all that legalese in a Help menu item, it doesn't need to be on the splash screen).

I had a similar issue recently- may we’ll be a bug?

Looking into this for you, as I was also unable to import your attached EDL.

What program are you using to export your EDLs?

Re: Can't import EDLs, consistently get "the file is not valid and can't be opened"

The EDL I'd initially wanted to import was generated from my VFX database.

But when that failed, I wanted to determine whether there was something wrong with my EDL formatting.

So I generated EDLs for testing using the List Tool in Media Composer 2018.4.0. The one attached to the initial post in this thread was exported from Media Composer using the CMX3600 setting. I also exported a File32 and File129 to test. Media Composer was unable to import any of them.

DaVinci Resolve had no trouble importing the EDL I'd generated from my database, and from Resolve I exported an AAF, and Media Composer had no problem importing that AAF and relinking to the files. So I have a workaround.

I've attached the database-generated EDL to this message just for the sake of completeness.

I'm not familiar with the program you're using. Is it actually called "VFX Database" or is it some other piece of software?

Re: Can't import EDLs, consistently get "the file is not valid and can't be opened"

I made a VFX database in Filemaker Pro, and I coded in the ability to export EDLs for placement of VFX shots. It's all custom.

But, though it's the reason I want to be able to import EDLs, it doesn't really matter in terms of this particular bug. In my testing EDLs exported directly from Media Composer can't be imported into Media Composer, my custom-generated EDLs are not part of the problem.

Re: Can't import EDLs, consistently get "the file is not valid and can't be opened"

For me a simple one event sequence exported using list tool defaults in 8.9.2 will import to that version, but 2018.4 complains that it is not a valid file.

Avid has identified a bug...but it didn't make it into the next release. Should be fixed in the one that follows.

2018.3 can do the trick, good I had that on my laptop.

I believe the fix will be in 2018.6, when released.
