    trouble with spanned AMA clips

    Hi

I'm having a hard time linking spanned canon C300 clips, these are 78 clips from different folders, so I would prefer to find a solution to not re-AMA them individually again.

I can link/unlink/relink all un-spanned clips. But the spanned clips will only link the last part of the AMA-Audio, no matter what I do.

I have installed the latest Canon XF Plugin xpmw-3-4-0-8-9l for Avid Media Access [Windows], also tested with the older xpmw-3-3-1-12-9l Plugin

I see in Source-Browser that the individual files of such a spanned clip use MSP-MFX plugin when I switch to "autodetect plugin".

When I manually switch to the Canon XF plugin, the entry changes to "can't be linked"

Any idea how I can asign the Canon XF Plugin to 78 clips at once and then hopefully re-AMA the spanned audio?

    thx, have a nice sunday

    m

Re: trouble with spanned AMA clips

created a new project. MC 2018.12.1

[EDIT Just tried on another machine with Avid Media Composer v2019.6

same, installed latest Canon XF Plugin xpmw-3-4-0-8-9l for Avid Media Access [Windows], spanned clips will not link as one single clip]

    can anybody reproduce this?

I recall having linked to the original AMA clips with an MC 8.6

may it be that the new version will not link to spanned clips?

    thx

Re: trouble with spanned AMA clips

I'm not sure what you are linking specifically or how Canon writes its media, but I've always found with Avid that you need to make sure that you copy over the entire folder structure from the original media in order for Avid to string all the pieces together.

For a long time we were shooting on Panasonic cameras that recorded to SD cards and often would just copy over the sub folder that had the main media files and ignore the rest. We would run into issues if there were spanned clips since something within the other folders is what told Avid how to string those clips together.

You really want to link to the folder structure to make this work as expected. Copy the entire folder structure from the card(s) to the disk. In the Source Browser, at the top (next to the Search box) is a button that lets you view folders as media volumes. Turn that on. Now go to the top level folder that you copied over. When you click on that you should see the clips in the selection pane (depending on the folder structure, you may have to drill down a level). You should now be able to get your spanned clips as a single meedia file.

Re: trouble with spanned AMA clips

Hey DSTone, you are da man

that trick helped me at least to link again to spanned clips. In fact this trick is the only way to make them use the CanonXF plugin.

I tried fiddling around to relink the whole bunch of clips  (that sit in about twenty different bins) - but no luck.

ok, so instead of loosing even more time trying to relink them all at once, I started to do it one by one. ;-(

    thx again

    Hi DS,

Wonder if you can help me with another issue on this.

I've tried the process as described above (I'm on 2019.12) and selecting CARD 001 in the Explore (left-hand) panel of Source Browser, then selecting (single-click, not opening) CONTENTS folder in the main window I can then Link to the multiple spanned clips inside but it won't Import. The Import button looks clickable (i.e. NOT greyed-out) but zip happens.

I'm actually trying to import several spanned clips as a single clip but have to delve into CONTENTS/CLIPS001/C30090 and Ctrl+select each spanned clip (C3009001, C3009002, C3009003 etc.) individually in order to Import.

Even then they're importing as individual clips, not a merged single clip.

I only ask as it's a observational documentary and I have over one hundred SD cards full of multiple Canon C300 Mk II spanned XDCAM HD 50Mbits clips and although it's not like I'm going outside any time soon, be GREAT if there was a way to achive this semi-automatically!

    Thanks in advance  :o)

Are these actually stored as spanned clips? Aren't they actually chunked clips. The limit of the camera recording time causes it to break the recording into mutliple files?

So can't the individual clips be AMA linked in and then auto sequenced into one lomng joined up sequence of all the clips.

Which you can then create into a nw clip?

Hi Pat, thanks for getting in touch.

Ah yes, I believe that's exactly what they are (those wasn't aware of the "chunked" terminology).

I've autosequenced but how do I turn that autoseqeunce into a new clip?

Basically I'm picking up a project mid-edit and trying to relink an imported timeline but due to the spanned clips and the liklihood that the prior editor cut from a newly-created clip that I can't/won't have access to I'm trying to find a solution to help me point the imported timeline red OFFLINE MEDIA clips to something useful!

    Thanks again for reaching out,

Do you have any idea how the original footage was ingested? Import is different to AMA linking.

if you can email the bin with just the sequence in it to me I can dig deeper.

Re: trouble with spanned AMA clips

I believe the footage was imported (at DNxHD 36) to cut offline but I've been asked to now get involved so the original workflow may not apply. I'm not certain how the spanned/chunked clips were processed after import - no easy way of finding out.

I have AMA'd to all the footage but only a fraction of it has appeared, everything else is MEDIA OFFLINE.

I was thinking I'd need to transcode everything at DNxHD 36 but it's a LOT of footage and I just wanted to see if anyone out there had an answer before I bid farewell to the next few days!!

I will email you a bin, standby...

Re: trouble with spanned AMA clips

I would be curious when the original work began and if the editor used the Canon XF Utility - available in different versions - that some would use outside of Avid to process Canon footage.

I have a distant memory of complaining that while the Canon Utility process did allow stitching of continuously recorded chunks, it also would not treat other non-continuous clips within the same folder separately. So not perfect, like the way MC handles volumes with a mix of chunked and separate clips.

I'm going to try running the Link test again looking in SB at every plugin available or the other trick mentioned.

My bet is the original clips were made with that Canon Utility.

Maybe you can install it and try it out. I do not recall what format the old XF Utility produced.

Or, perhaps Adobe Media Encoder was used to stitch and export at DNxHD.

    good luck.
