    MC doesn't recognize 16:9 SD

How can I make MC understand that I want to capture 16:9 SD footage?? It does capture the source but doesn't recognise that it is 16:9!

Re: MC doesn't recognize 16:9 SD

First make sure you are in an SD project.

If this is DV footage then it is always technically 4:3 which is then stretched (known as 16:9 Full Height Anamorphic). ie: it is always 720x576 stretched to look like 1024x576.

Simply right clickon the composer window and select 16:9 video.

When you go to export you can either export... same as source

                                                                   ... 720x576 rectangular pixels

                                                                   ... 1024x576 square pixels

...in order to maintain the aspect ratio.

When you convert to mpeg2 for DVD however it will always be 720x576 rectangular pixels and it is important at this stage that you let Sorensson or whatever encoding program you use that it is 16:9 as this is the stage at which it will tell the DVD what aspect ratio to use to display.

    Hope this helps.

Five systems... Avid1 = HP Qualified Workstation with Vista64 MojoDX and MC 4.04 (work) Avid2 = Dell Qualified Workstation with Vista64 and MC 4.04 ... [view my complete system specs]

I don't really know what I am doing, I just keep hitting up the Avid Forums for information.

Re: MC doesn't recognize 16:9 SD

I have always my MC monitors at 16:9. And this to have more room for the timeline.

This doesn't affect the way MC understands the aspect ratio.

It's only for viewing the correct aspect ratio.

If it is 4:3 it comes as 4:3 and if it is 16:9 it stays 16:9.

Re: MC doesn't recognize 16:9 SD

But if you have 16:9 monitors, then title tool and shape FX will also be 16:9. An issue if the footage is 4:3.

I am editing now a piece in 4:3 and I have my monitors at 16:9 as always.

Titles look ok. I ma following the safe areas always. Shapes FX? you mean masks and?

I have many effects on clips, don't see any problem there.

I have the timeline ready to show you.

Re: MC doesn't recognize 16:9 SD

Your titles will be in 16:9 so when you view them in 4:3 they will be squashed horizontally. Not a problem, just changes how they look.

When I said "Shape FX", I mean't any with geomotric settings i.e. Circle wipe. It will produce a round wipe in 16:9 if your monitors are set to 16:9. Again, not a problem, just something to bear in mind.

Yes but this will be only in monitors not at the final export.

Re: MC doesn't recognize 16:9 SD

No, Avid looks to your monitor settings when handling items that are different at 16:9 or 4:3.

So if you do a circle wipe with 16:9 monitors, and then export the sequence for 4:3 playback, the wipe will not be circular.

I just did a test with titles at 4:3 and 16:9.

    They are the same.

This is when I switch to 4:3 monitor.

The clip is 4:3 and the export the same without a mask or anything.

This is after I have switched to 16:9 monitors. The titles look the same.

And this is normal as I have exported same as source and without a mask to convert it to 16:9 or other.

Re: MC doesn't recognize 16:9 SD

Creat titles with 4:3 monitors and render. Now change to 16:9 monitors and create titles using same font and settings.

I did exactly as you said and the result was the same.

I also cleared the renders in between 4to3 and 16to9.

I always knew that the monitors are for viewing purposes only.

    4to3.

I'm not front of an Avid right now, but I'll do this tomorrow and post back. My titles are definitely different depending on monitor aspect.
