    editing canon 550d clips

    Hello,
I bought myself a canon 550d (Video Recording System: MOV/H.264). I have just imported a few clips into AMC. It is not Fast Importing but Creating Video From QT what it does when dragging them into a bin. And it appears that editing works fine. Should I transcode these MOV clips into DNx 120, as I used to do with HDV clips? Can I expect some trouble? I expected it to be more difficult to edit AVCHD, reading discussions about it and seeing most people convert it outside AMC before importing.
    Thanks,
    Rob

PS Will it be this easy feeding AMC with camcorder files, as from the canon HF S series or the panasonic TM700 with Video Recording System: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264?

Very pleased to see this post as I'm about to buy one myself - to intercut with HDV from a Sony Z1 - so here's a bump to your email in the hope of more input

    Re: editing canon 550d clips

We've seen quite a lot of material from 5DMkll's and 7D's. I assume the 550D records in the same format. Our experience has been that direct import works very well although slowly (about 4 times realtime - obviously depends on machine spec).

We tried using QT Pro to preconvert on another machine to DNxHD 185 (we're in PAL land) but although these then fast imported we found gamma issues.

There's a possible workflow in one of the other threads on this subject here that looks promising but we haven't had a chance to try it yet.

    HTH

    regards

I guess, the lack of respons follows the repeated recommendations to transcode the footage before bringing it into AMC.

If they import fine, why is the need to transcode them first?

    Re: editing canon 550d clips

There's no problem at all directly importing, other than the time it takes. A lot of people find it beneficial to tie up time on a standalone PC/Mac rather than tie up an Avid suite.

I won't be there, so I hope this will not stop Avid from adding this to MC. Big Smile

How is 550d in terms of image quality, compared to 5 or 7?

I have read some reviews and they say that the video quality is good.

It has also a stereo mic input as well!

I am strongly considering replacing my HV30 with it...

    Re: editing canon 550d clips

You won't want to edit with Native Canon EOS 7D MOV files, most CPU's bottleneck when scrubbing through these files on a timeline. It's very CPU intensive and not really meant for editing. Do you have access to Adobe Media Encoder? If so that'll help you to convert your files to another friendlier format.

If you don't mind spending a few $100+, then look into Cineform Neoscene. This is an awesome 4:2:2 codec that's much less processor intensive on NLE's. You'd actually be upgrading the color sampling since the 7D records 4:1:1.

Now i found out a fastest and easiest way to solve it-just use a professional HD Video converter which can convert MTS/TOD/MOD to wmv, mov, mp4, avi, etc. without any problem.I paid $35 for it.I am happy with it.

Canon 550D's files are working great into MC4. Even on the laptop the scrubbing is awesome.

The files are not CPU intensive. I am working with them for 1 month now.

Even timelapses (photo sequences) are cutting fine with MC4.

The only drawback is the import times but once they are imported are fine.
