    Avid DNxHD quicktimes crashing computer

Every time we open a Quicktime movie encoded with an Avid DNxHD codec (in Quicktime 7, compressor, or FCP) it crashes our system.

"Quicktime Player 7 quit unexpectedly while using the AvidAVdnCodec plugin."

The DNxHD .mov files will open and play just fine with VLC, but not with any of the Apple Pro applications.

Here's the kick: they work fine on an older computer.

We *just* reinstalled *everything* on the newer computer. Both computers have FCS and Avid MC5 installed. The older computer is an 8-core Mac Pro. The new computer is a 12-core Mac Pro from late 2010.

Any ideas on why the .mov's won't open on the newer computer?

    Thanks in Advance!

I sure hope that has nothing to do with the Adobe/Apple debacle on QT API :P

Weird that it would work on an old computer and not on a newer one. What OS and MC versions are you running?

It was a bug: "Previously applications utilizing the DNxHD codec on Westmere MacPro 12 core systems would crash. This has been fixed."

Here's a link to the fix of the LE version (no licensing restrictions). The PE version (for use with MC itself) of the revised codec is available with MC 5.0.3.9 and 5.5.2 in the download center.

That's interesting.  We just installed 5.0.3.9 from the ground up before this crashing happened.  Thank-you for the links!  We'll give them a shot and post our results.

Re: Avid DNxHD quicktimes crashing computer

I just installed MC 5.5.2 on my Westmere 12-Core. And the DNxHD QuickTime Reference movies still crash when I try to open them.

Is there anything I can do to avoid this?

I just finished a project and I really need to do QuickTime Reference!

Try downloading the LE version of the QT codecs and see if that works.

Thanks, with the LE version it works fine.

What is the the difference between LE and PE ?

    The LE one works?

It's a licensing difference.  There's a encoding codec in the PE version that allows Avid apps to encode something that requires an additional licensing fee.  I think it may be some MPEG-2 variant, but I'm not sure.

I'm experiencing this same issue when I try to use the DNxHD codec in compressor. "Compressor quit unexpectedly while using the AvidAVdnCodec plug-in" is the error I get. Would using the LT version work for me as well? Where can I download this and how do I replace it on my system?
