    FAILURE TO LAUNCH

Upgraded to 5.5.2 .  New drive, clean install.  When I try to boot into MC, I get the error message

can't initialize audio hardware.  This is the crash report:  (forget it, too much information.)

Any help? I've tried a complete system reboot, and still have the problem.

My system, although older, is certified: 2.66 Intel Mac Pro, Dual Core, 7 gigs RAM.

OS 10.6.8 is not yet qualified for any version of MC. You should be running 10.6.6 or 10.6.7. From the Avid Knowledge Base. You also need to running the qualified QT version.

Your OS is too new - have to roll back.

Don't forget to check the Readme notes on each piece of software you own before you install -- http://dl.avid.com/Files/2238/README_AvidMediaComposer_v5.5.2_Jun_27_11.pdf?id=2238&pid=724

This isn't just an Avid thing but also applies to any upgrades/installs for other products - from Adobe Photoshop to MS Office.

Good point. Always check system requirements.

Ok.  Crapola.  I wiped the drive, and reinstalled 10.6.3, then updated to 10.6.6.  After reinstalling MC, I'm still getting the same error message (only difference, now I'm running .6.6)  Do I really need to update to .6.7?  Can I do that without wiping everything out and starting all over (I like clean installs.)  I've got a client coming over with a project started on 5.5 and I've got to be able to open it.  (Yeah, I know it's a Sunday.)  Any further advice?

P.S.  Quicktime 7 is okay right.  The system requirements say they've tested X, but Larry, I think, is suggesting 7 will work fine.

    Re: FAILURE TO LAUNCH

It is qualified to run on either 10.6.6 or 10.6.7, but Avid always likes a clean OS Install on Macs. So I would recommend a clean install of 10.6.6, not an update, and reinstall 5.5. Don't forget to deactivate your software license before uninstalling.

what is really weird is 9 x out of 10 wipeing the drive and installing the right one works.  The only thing 2 things I can think of is.....

    1. do you have ANY hardware attached to the mac at all?  if you do - Mojo, matrox, AJA, remove it.

    2. it is posible the MC app is corrupt and you are installing a bad copy.  can you try and downlaod MC again?

    Allow me to clarify:

Quicktime X is qualified for MC 5.0.x versions and MC 5.5.x versions.

MC 5.5.2 is qualified for Mac OS 10.6.6 and 10.6.7.

At this time, NO VERSIONS of Media Composer are qualified for either OS Snow Leopard (10.6.8) or OS Lion X (10.7).

    Re: FAILURE TO LAUNCH

I'm glad Marianna is here.  Larry, thanks for the quick replies.  Let me clarify:  I'm not installing from a download.  I bought the upgrade production package from my friendly reseller (Keycode) a few days ago.  So I'm installing off a disk.  I'm installing the Mac OS off a disk too - Snow Leopard 10.6.3, which I then upgrade via download to 10.6.6 (I suppose I could jump straight to the 10.6.7 update, but if 10.6.6 works...)  so I don't think I need to deactive anything when I reinstall.  Everything acts normally until it hits the "can't initialize audio hardware" bump.  I do have an AJA card installed, and I guess I could remove it - as I've posted elsewhere, I'm able to run MC 3.5.3 off another drive and an older OS, and I've got a PCI e-Sata card - for external drive connectivity - but I'm not pulling that.

It takes so *** long for the installs, I really don't want to do this again.  Especially as this last try has not produced any results.  If any of this new info helps, fire away.  I'll shut down and pull the AJA card, and try without it, but I'm not going to be happy about that.  I run FCP off the older OS too on the other drive, and I like the card installed for that.

    Re: FAILURE TO LAUNCH

WOW!  Okay, It wasn't the AJA card, which I'm going to reinstall in a minute and try to launch again.  It appears to have been nothing more than a Logitech camera/microphone combo (for Skype) attached via USB.  I wasn't thinking about that, but when I saw it in the system pref audio list, I pulled it and tried to launch again, and presto, it worked!  Now, is that a bug?  Does anyone else try to run Skype off the same computer their MC is on?  One of the production houses I work at fairly regularly has their computers set up with Skype, and they run a big set up - off a Unity - with no apparent problems.  (Of course, they probably had professional installers.)

Anyway, I'm going to keep posting as I ad things back.  Curious.  Perhaps if others can replicate the problem, we can come up with a patch for it.  Now that their working on the ole Magical 64 - we're gonna want to be able to run multiple things (hell, I run multiple apps all the time on 10.5.8 - have FCP open, MC open, Soundtrack Pro open, Squeeze, QT, Compressor - well, probably not ALL of them all the time, nor ALL of them some of the time, but many of them at once, to say nothing about running MPEG Streamclip, and other apps as necessary.  Marianna, thanks for the heads up.

P.S.  I wander around different forums - but don't we have some way of noting when a question has been answered/solved?  I can't find any ICON to activate to let Forum users Know this is a thread to which we've sewn up a solution.  (Yeah, yeah, I couldn't resist.)
