• Re: Reasonable notebook for Avid MC & Adobe CC?
2012 to 2017 is 5 years not 7 for those who count in years, not frames or seconds. ;)
Sorry, I should have explained that I bought the laptop second-hand, and it still had 1 year left of the 3 year HP warranty, so I reckoned it was now around 7 years old.

Not sure what price range 'reasonable' is for you, but any decent notebook for editing and VFX is likely to be in the $1500-2500 price range. I can vouch for the HP mobile workstation range as I have one of the older 17" versions (dating back to 2012) which still gives sterling service, even if it's not the quickest machine in town

  • Re: Forced windows update - beware

One more reason why I've resisted going to Win 10. I know I'll eventually have to make the transition when one or more of the applications I use refuses to run in Win 7. I was told the best way to disable automatic updates in Win 10 was using the Local Group Policy Editor, changing the settings to 'Notify for download and notify for install'

  • Re: Confused about renewal options

Thank you guys for clearing that up. Ralph - might I suggest that the plan options on the products page be changed for users with Symphony, so that it only ever shows the correct plan. As you rightly say, you would never need more than one Symphony option per licence, so no one would ever need to select this plan. Luckily I spotted it before I put it

  • Confused about renewal options

I need to renew my subscriptions by the end of the year but I'm finding the plan options somewhat confusing. I have two dongles with the Symphony option, (which are described as 'crossgrade from Symphony') and when I click on the plan options it has two options... 1) Media Composer software with Symphony option - GBP 320/yr 2) Media Composer

  • Re: Memory maxing

It does sound like something is eating up your resources. Have you tried looking within Task Manager at the individual processes that are related to MC? You should see quite a few that are related to Avid. Some are to do with the background transcode services or Application Manager. I disabled both of these from my start-ups as I don't really need

  • Re: Reducing moire on 4k DJI footage in 1080p/25 project

I've used Boris effect's temporal blur on stationary shots and it gives a better result than plain blur. You can also use something like the Animatte tool to limit the effect to just the problem areas. No good though if you have any kind of movement or camera move!

  • Re: stuttering in 4k ugh
I really do not have the bandwidth to transcode what will be 200 hours of footage.
When you say 'bandwidth', do you mean the space on on your media drives or the amount of time it will take? If it's the former, you could always transcode to a proxy format for the edit, link back to camera originals

I'm afraid Pat's right. The demands that today's camera formats make on our systems mean that you really need both high core counts and high CPU speeds. Even this may not be enough when you start adding in noise reduction/de-bayering etc, which is why grading workstations often add two or more high-end GPUs or even additional specialist

  • Re: Duplicated sequence not in selected bin
I duplicate sequence, select the bin where I want it to be duplicated but it saves the sequence somewhere else.
Have you tried the alternative method of duplicating a sequence? That is, holding down the CTRL key while you drag the sequence into another bin.
