Best way to share small media additions between editors on same project?

Premiere editor coming into Avid. Still getting used to some of the differences in media management.

I'm working with another editor on a series of short, and we're making a lot of music and gfx changes. We both got handed the drives with the project already set up, but now I'm a bit confused on how we can best keep the assets consistent and avoid them going offline. We're just on two separate hard drive sets, sharing media over dropbox/wetransfer/email.

Say I import a new music track into the cut, and then send him the updated timeline and media of the new music track. What's the best way for him to bring the new music into the edit without seeing that offline bar? Do I send him the bin the music was in as well, and then he imports it into his avid media folder?

Likewise, if he puts a new music file into the cut and sends it to me, what's the best way to import the new music clip into the project

So far, I've had no luck reconnecting these files, and just end up importing and recutting the same music inserts. There must be a better way, right?

All you have to do is transfer the mediafiles -- assuming you're working with managed Avid mediafiles. If you're linking to files, I'd recommend against that for anything you want to share, as it makes things too complicated.

A thing you could do: rename your Avid Mediafiles subfolders. By default, you will find a subfolder named "1" (in /Avid MediaFiles/MXF/). Rename that to another number (numbers only), on both systems. Now when either of you import or render anything new, it will end up in an automaically newly created folder "1" again. At the end of each working day, rename it with the date (20230113 for today). Send that one to each other via DBox or WeTransfer or whatever. Sync those folders so both folders contain the media each of you have added/created that day.

MC will re-index this folder as soon as you launch MC. No linking/connecting should be required, as MC will know where the file lives.

Another posiibility, if you are on Windows: Have each editor create a DropBox folder, giving the other user read-only access, then use Vsubst to mount those folders as volumes under Win. Then have each editor import/render to their read/write folder. Haven't tested this particular setup myself, but should work.

I'm not aware of any Mac utility that lets you mount a folder as a volume, so I don't think there's a way to pull this off on Macs.

Another tought: each get a CloudStore Mini from BMD and have those sync up. Haven't used it, and you'll likely need MC Ultimate or Perpetual to be able to use shared media like that.

If it fits in your budget, Postlab for Media Composer or LucidLink + Mimiq might be worth investigating.

    Hey!

This is a tricky one. Ideally you'd be on a shared storage system like a Avid NEXIS Edit on Demand or Avid NEXIS Edge where this sort of stuff is very simple, but I understand of course budget. Those are enterprise level solutions.

Your stuff must be Avid media managed ie everything is going to the Avid MediaFiles folders.

If it's small stuff like audio or GFX, IMO the best thing to do would be as follows:

You: Download the audio asset and import/link transcode into your avid project

You: Sends just a bin of the GFX asset, and the GFX asset itself to the other editor

Other editor: Downloads the updated bin you sent them, and copies that on the finder/windows explorer level to their avid project, then right clicks the bin container and hits "refresh"

Other editor: The GFX asset will be now offline, but you'll see the offline masterclip in the bin. Right click the offline masterclip, hit Batch re-import, and navigate to the GFX asset.

If it's larger assets like rushes, best to transcode them via Resolve to a numbered Avid MediaFiles folder E.G:

    1 for shoot day 1

2 for shoot day 2 etc

That way you just send the latest offline material, and the other editor 'scans in' that transcoded material.

    Hope that makes sense!
