AUTO SYNC CREATES TOO MANY TRACKS

    Hi,

I am helping a friend set up her Avid project (AVID 2022. 12 / Windows 10)

And we are having trouble using auto sync, cant get it to create only 2 stereo tracks. Tracks needed are A4 and A6 on her recorded sound and we need those to be A1 and A2 on the final files to edit with. We are choosing Waveform Analysis.

She has chosen A4 and A6 but autosync creates 3 tracks, not 2. Because the options of using only trk 4 and 6 from the recorded sound file but not trk 5,  is not possible  because you can only chose

    RANGE START A4 END A6.
So Autosync choses A4, A5 and A6.  We cannot figure out out to bring in ONLY A4 and A6. Tried checking Collapse Audio Tracks but that doesnt solve the problem. I know this is probably something simple that Im not seeing but Im not that familiar with this newer version of Avid. Thanks Tracy

Re: AUTO SYNC CREATES TOO MANY TRACKS

    Hi Tracy,

This is not as easy as one would hope, I think.

Two possible solutions I can think of:

Option 1. Before you do any AutoSyncing, select all the imported audio clips in their bin(s), Unlink the audio, Modfiy the Tracks of the now offline clips (so they contain only A4 and A6), then relink them. Autosync the resulting clips. Downside is you lose access to those extra tracks, should you want to be able to access them later.

Option 2. Before you do any AutoSyncing, select all the audio clips in their bin(s), choose File, Export, Shotlog and export as ALE. Open the resulting ALE file in a simple text editor, and replace A1A2A3A4A5A6 with A4A6. Save the ALE. Go back into MC, and choose File-Import Media, Shotlog, choose Options, and choose "Merge with known sources and automatically create subclips". This should now result in an A4A6 subclip for each A1A2A3A4A5A6 audio masterclip. You could now AutoSync the A4A6 subclips with the picture clips. You would then end up with synced clips with just A4 and A6. Or, if you choose the Collapse option in AutoSync, they would be shifted down to A1 and A2. The upside of this method is that you could still matchframe to all the other channels.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Tracey,

It's actually a real hassle to add a picture over here, but it can be done.

I never use URL's but always upload them to my Avid forum account.

    1. Click on your "Username" from your Avid forum account.

    2. Scroll down and click on "My Files".

    3. Scroll down to "Choose File".

    4. Navigate to the file on your system that you want to upload to your Avid forum account.

    5. Create a new post and click on "Insert Media" in the task bar above your post (the film strip with the plus sign on the left of the smiley).

    6. Click on "Browse".

    7. Navigate to the picture that you want to add to your post and "Double Click" on it.

    8. Done! Now you can post your new message. Smile

    Hope this helps!

    Kind regards,

    Ivan

Hey, thanks! I never knew that. I remember now, I used to upload them to Photobuvket, then use a link.

    Thanks Job.
I think this is something that Avid should fix! You should be able to select the tracks you want to cut with I think?

Why did they do it that way.. I've had sound delivered with 8 tracks.. and was able to choose the 2 stereo Trks created by the on set mixer.. they were usually on A1 and A2. cutting with more than 2 tracks is exstausting.

Losing access to the Xtra TRAK isn't a problem for the edit as we have all of them with matching TC in rushes bin.. All 4 recorded  tracks. No need to link back to original during edit.

What about this solution...what if we  Turn each clip into a stereo track?  And edit with those?

but I tried what I used to know how to do quite easily.. choosing modify, multichannel audio.. but I can't find where to do that now! It's not in the place it was is it?

Pity doing a mix fown on the track doesn't keep the TC on it! Or does it now?

For the next shooting day maybe she can record with no empty tracks..

    Thankyou for replying.

WHAT IF WE DID THIS WITH COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL TRACKS?

And the unwanted TRK 5 is empty.

    Tracy Granger ACE:
WHAT IF WE DID THIS WITH COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL TRACKS?

When you modify the Master Clips, you modify the Master Clips. Unless you say you'd want to do process the original files, outside of MC, but that would also mean you lose access to all the alternative tracks.

    Tracy Granger ACE:
And the unwanted TRK 5 is empty.

If you're sure it's empty on all takes, you could unlink, modify (deselect A5), relink, and you'd have master clips without A5, which would allow you to AutoSync the range A4-A6 while ending up with just two tracks. My bet is that that would be the fastest method. You'd lose direct access to A5, but if that is truly empty, it won't hurt.

The method #1 I described earlier would also not destroy any media. You'd just have masterclips that only link to A4-A6. You could still create a new bin in wich you drag the msm.db folders, which would then be populated with all-channel master clips, as the media itself still lives in the MediaFiles folder. I just don't think MatchFrame would bring you there.

There is of course a more laborious method, which is to AutoSync first, then subclip each individual take, selecting only A4 and A6. But my method 1 would be a way around all that manual labor.
